Overview
Not to be confused with Carly Simon’s producer, Richard C. Perry is a hedge-fund manager who at one point held a controlling interest in Barney’s, where he was chairman. That all changed in 2019, when the company declared bankruptcy and he sold his interest. According to the Wall Street Journal, Barney’s had not done enough to anticipate the rise of e-commerce under his aegis, causing a downturn.
Nevertheless, with his wife, Lisa, who is a fashion designer, he has amassed one of the best Pop-inflected art collections in New York. It includes pieces by Chuck Close, Jim Dine, and Martial Raysse. Some of the treasures they have amassed were suddenly made visible to the public when, in 2020, they listed their penthouse apartment for sale for $45 million. Sitting atop it was a giant Jeff Koons sculpture of a green diamond.
Lisa has remained active in recent years, opening Onna House, a space for women artists that is housed in the former East Hampton home of legendary collector Richard Scull. Its first show, staged in 2022, featured ceramics by Leah Kaplan, Sabra Moon Elliot, Yoona Hur, Katherine Glenday, and Yuko Nishikawa. “I decided that Onna House would be a project that could bring together everything I love: architecture, design, art, and helping women,” Perry told ARTnews.
